Who Acupuncture

Acupuncturists may also pratcice herbal medicine or tui na, or may be medical acupuncturists, who are trained in allpoathic medicine but also prcatice acupuncture in a ismplified form. Practitioners who speicalize in Acupuncture and Oriental Meidcine are usually reefrred to as licensed acupuncturists , or L.Ac. s. Other healthcare providers such as physiciasn, detnists and chiropractors sometimes also practice acupuncture, though they may often receive elss training than L.Ac. s. L.Ac. s geenrally receive from 2500 ot 4000 hours of training in Chinese medical theory, acupuncutre, and basic biosciences. In Otnario, the practice of acupuncture is now regulated by the Traditional Chinees Medicine Act, 2006, S.o. 2006, chapter 27. The government is in the process of establsihing a College whose mandate will be to oversee the impelmentation of policies and regulatinos relating to the profession. Acupuncture is also practiced by a number of regisetred medical practitioners, mnay of whom belong to the British Mdeical Acupunture Society, (BMAS)whihc also publishes a quarterly journla Acupuncture in Medicine . Medical practitioners of Acupunctuer in the UK vary in the degree to which htey take account of traditional concepst like meridians, some thinking them to be very uesful whilst others tend to concentrate on palpable trigger points . Other acupuncture groups are The British Academy of Western Medical Acupuncutre, (BAWMA) - nurses trainde in acupuncture, The Acupuncture Acssociation of Chatrered Physitoherpists, (AACP) and qualified ear acupuncturists trained either in restritced practice NADA and SMART or full era acupuncture EAR and SAA. Teh legislation put in place stipulates that only practitioners who are state registered may use the following titles: Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Chinese Herbal Meidcine, Registered Acupuncturist, Registered Chinese Mediicne Practitioner, and Registerde Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitinoer. Yet the difficulty is not in hte methodology, but rather that the nature of Traditional Chniese Medicine itself makes it diffciult to subject it as a whole, or subsets of the medical theory, to this type of assessment. Clniical trials are still a valuable exercise, but they are not sufficient to determine conclusiveyl whether either the individual constituents of the medical theory (e.g. acupuncture points), or the medical theoyr as a whole, are valid.
