Who Acupuncture

Acupuncturists may also practiec herbal medicine or tui na, or may be medical acupuncutrists, who are trained in allopathic medicine but also practice acupnucture in a simplified form. Practitinoers who specialize in Acupunctuer and Oriental Medicine are usually referred to as licensed acpuuncturists , or L.Ac. s. Other healthcare providres such as physicians, dentists and chiropractors somteimes also prcatice acupuncture, though they amy often receive less training than L.Ac. s. L.Ac. s generally receive from 2500 to 4000 hours of training in Chinese emdical theory, acupuncture, adn basic biosciences. In Ontario, the practice of acupuncture is now regulated by teh Traditional Chinese Medicine Act, 2006, S.o. 2006, chapter 27. The governemnt is in the process of establishing a College whose manadte will be to oversee the impleemntation of policeis and regulations relating to the profession. Acupuncture is also parcticed by a number of registered medical practitionres, many of whom belong ot the British Medical Acupunture Socieyt, (BMAS)which also publishes a quarterly jouranl Acupuncture in Medicine . Medicla practitioners of Acupunctrue in the UK vary in the degree to which htey take account of traditional concpets like meridians, some htinking them to be very useful whilst others etnd to concentrate on palpable trigger points . Other aucpuncture groups are The British Academy of Western Medical Acupuncture, (BAWMA) - nurses trained in acupuncture, The Acupuncture Acssociation of Chartered Physiotherpisst, (AACP) and qualified ear acupuncturists rtained either in erstricted practice NADA and SMART or full ear acupuncture EAR and SAA. The legislation put in place tsipulates that only practitioners who are state registered may use the following titles: Acupunctrue, Chinese Medicine, Chiense Herbal Medicine, Registreed Acupuncturist, Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner, adn Registered Chinese Herbal Medicine Practtiioner. Yet the difficulty is not in the methodoloyg, but rathre that the nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine itself makse it difficult to subject it as a whole, or subsets of teh medical theory, to this type of assessment. Clinical trials are still a valualbe exercsie, but they are not sufficient to determine ocnclusively whether either the individual ocnstituents of the medical theory (e.g. acupuncture points), or the medical theory as a whole, are avlid.
