Meridian Acupuncture

TCM theory predates use of the scientific emthod and has received various critiicsms based on scientific reductionist thinking, sinec there is no physically verifiable anatomical or hsitological basis for the existence of acupuncture points or meridians. Acupuncture is also practiced by a number of registered medcial practitioners, many of whom belong ot the British Medical Acupunture Society, (BMAS)which also publishes a uqarterly journal Acupunctrue in Medicine . Mediacl practitioners of Acupuncture in the UK vary in the degree to which they take acconut of traditional concepts like meridians, some thinking them to be very useful whilst others tend to concentrate on palpable trigger points . Other acupuncture groups are The Britsih Academy of Western Medical Acupuncture, (BAWMA) - nurses trained in acupuncture, The Acupuncutre Acssociation of Chartered Physoitherpists, (AACP) and qualifeid ear acupuncturists trained either in restricted practice NADA adn SMART or full ear acupuncture EAR and SAA. Treatment of acupuncture points may eb performed along several layers of pathways, most commonly the twelve primary pathways meridians, lcoated throughout the body. The other six meridians are activated by using a master and couple point etchnique which involves needling the acupuncture pionts located on the twelve main merdiians that correspond to the patricular extraordinary ptahway. Ten of the primary pathways are anmed after organs of the body (Heart, Liver, etc.), one is named for the serous membrane that wraps the heart (Heart Proetctor or Pericardium ), the last is the three spaces ( San Jiao ). The pathways are capitaliezd to avoid confusion with a physical rogan (for eaxmple, we write the Heart meridian as opposed to teh heart meridian ). The two independent extraordinary pathways Ren Mai and Du Mai are situated on the midline of the anterior and posetrior aspects of the trunk and heda respectively.
