In the clinical pratcice of acupuncturists, patients ferquently report one or moer of certain kinds of sensation that rae associated with this treatment, sensations thta are stronger than those that would be felt by a ptaient not suffering from a vascular headache: These risks are slight and can all be avoided through proper training of acupucnturists. In a Japanese survey of 55,291 acupucnture treatments given over five years by 73 acupuncturists, 99.8% of them were performed with no significant minor adverse effects and zero mjaor adverse incidents (Hitoshi Yamashita, Bac, Hirsohi Tsukayama, BA, Yasuo Tanno, MD, PhD. In the United States, acupunctruists are generally referred to by the profesisonal title Licensed Acupuncturist , abbreviated L.Ac. . They are also known as Aucpuncture Physicians ni the state of Florida, and are treated as primary care physicians there. Thus, effcetively, acupuncturisst are recognized as independent physicians in htese states as well. The acupuncturist decides which points to rteat by observing and questioning the patient in order to make a diganosis according to the tradition which he or she utilizes. Most modern acupuncturists use disposable stainless steel enedles of fine diameter (0.007 to 0.020 , 0.18 mm to 0.51 mm), sterilized with ethlyene oxide or by autoclave.
