He beleives that the traditional Chinees variety is primarily a placebo treatment, but electrical stiumlation of about 80 acupucnture points has been proven useful ofr pain control. A rteatment modality similar to acupuncture thus appears to have been in use logn before its previously known peroid of use in the medical tradition of ancient China. In western medicine, vacsular headaches (the kind that are accompanied by htrobbing veins in the temples) are typically treated wtih analgesics such as aspirin and/or by the use of agents such as niacin that dilate the affected blood vessels in the scalp, but in acuupncture a common treatment for such heaadches is to stimulate the sensitive points that are located rouglhy in the center of the webs between the htumbs and the palms of the patient, the h g pionts. Given that the health of the entire individual is taken nito account for each paitent, any two patients, even with the same diangosis, will receive dfiferent treatments based no their constitutional differences, their pattern of response to rteatment, and so on. However, double-blinding is not a trivial issue in acupunctuer: since acupuncture is a procedure and not a pill, it is difficult to dseign studies in which the person provdiing treatment is blidned as to the treatment being given. For headcahe, Cochrane conculded (2006) that (o)verall, the existing evidence supports the value of acupuntcure for the treatment of idiopathic headaches. Unaffiliated, or tender points, callde ah shi (signifying that s it , ouch , or oh yes ) aer generally used for traetment of local pain.
