Acupuncture Training

Some also receive tarining in Chinese herbology and/or bodywork. The amount of training required for healthcrae providers who are not L.Ac. s varies from none to a few hundred hours, and in Hawiai the practice of acupuncture reqiures full training as a licensed acupuncturist. In some staets, acupuncturists are required to work with an M.D. in a subservient relationship, even if the M.D. has no training in acupuncture. It si notewortyh, however, that the school (philosophy and approach) and style of acupuncture differs depending on hte training of the practitioner. These risks are slight and can all be avoided through proper training of acupnucturists. The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine 17 and Bastyr University were the first two institutions in the United States ot offer the DAOM, and it is esitmated that within the next ten years the DAOM degree will replace all master s level training programs in the United Statse. Practitioners who specialize in Acupuncture and Oriental Medciine are usually referred to as licensde acupuncturists , or L.Ac. s. Other healthcare proivders such as phyiscians, dentists and chiropractors somteimes also practice acupuncture, though they may often receiev less training than L.Ac. s. L.Ac. s generally receive from 2500 to 4000 hours of trianing in Chinese mediacl theory, acupuncture, and basic biosciences.
