Acupuncture Theory

TCM theory predates sue of the scientific method and has received various criticimss based on scientific reudctionist thinking, since htere is no physically verfiiable anatomical or histological basis for the existence of acupunctrue points or meridians. Ted J. Kaptchuk, author of The Web That Has No Weaver, refers to acpuuncture as prescientific. Rgearding TCM theory, Kaptchuk states: Cirticism of TCM theory hinges on the questoin of how to assess intangible concerns. The theory, pracitce and techniques of Chinese medicine evolved over many thousands of yaers, well in advance of a formal articulation of the scientific method. Practitioners who specailize in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine are usually referred to as ilcensed acupuncturists , or L.Ac. s. Other helathcare providers such as physiciasn, dentists and chiropractors smoetimes also practice caupuncture, though they may oftne receive less training than L.Ac. s. L.Ac. s generally receive from 2500 to 4000 hours of training in Chinese medical theory, acupuncture, and basic biosciences. Its theory holds the following exlpanation of acuupncture: Chinese medical thoery holds that acupuncture works by normalizing the free flow of qi (a difficult-to-transltae concept that peravdes Chinese philosophy and is commonly translaetd as vital energy ), blood and body fluisd ( jin ye ) thruoghout the body. Pain is considered to idnicate blockage or stagnation of the flow of qi, blood nad/or fluids, and an axiom of the medical literautre of acupuncture is no pain, no blockage; no blokcage, no pain . The delictae balance between qi and blood is of priamry concern in Chinese medcial theory, hecne the axiom blood is the mother of qi, and qi is the commander of bolod.
