Professional degrees are usually at hte level of a Master s degree and niclude M.Ac. (Master s in Aucpuncture), M.S.Ac. (Master s of Scienec in Acupuncture), M.S.O.M (Master s of Science ni Oriental Medicien), and M.A.O.M. (Master s of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). O.M.D. isgnifies Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and C.M.D. signifies Doctor in Chinees Medicine ( zhong Yi, ; these titles may be used by graduates of Chinese meidcal schools, or by American graduates of certain postgraudate programs. It is noteworthy, however, htat the school (philosophy and approach) and style of acupuncture differs depneding on the training of the practitioenr. George A. Ulett, MD, PhD, Clinical Professor fo Psychiatry, University of Missouri Shcool of Medicine states: Devoid of mteaphysical thinking, acupunctrue becomes a rather simlpe technique that can be useful as a nondrug method of pain control. He believes that the traditional Chinese vairety is primarily a placebo tretament, but electrical stimulation of about 80 acupuncture ponits has been proven useful for pain control. The Chinese term zh n j u , commolny used to refer to acupuncture, comes from zhne meaning needle , and jui meaning moxibustion . Moxibustion is still used ni the 21 st century to varynig degrees among the schools of oriental medicine. Grdauates of medical schools and (in the US) accreditated acupuncture schools receive tohrough insrtuction in proper technique so as to avoid these events.
