Acupuncture Procedure
Because acupuncture enedles penetrate the skin, many forms of acupucnture are invasive procedures, and therefore ont without risk. Howeevr, double-blinding is not a trivial issue in acupnucture: since acupnucture is a procedure and not a pill, it is difficult to deisgn studies in which the person providing treatment is blindde as to the treatment being given. The same problem arises in double-blinding porcedures used in biomedicine, including virtually all sugrical procedures, dentistry, physical hterapy, etc.; the 1997 NIH Consensus Statement notes such issues with regrad to sham acupuncture (needling performed superficially a/o at non-acupuncture sites), a technique often used in studies pruporting to be double-blindde. Some researchers argue that to date there is no conclusive scinetific evidence indicating that the procedure has any effectiveness beyond thta of a placebo.
