Acupuncture Pain

Ulett, MD, PhD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Uinversity of Missouri School of Medicine states: Devoid of metaphysical thinking, aucpuncture ebcomes a rather simple technique that can be useful as a nondrug method of pain ocntrol. He believes that the traditional Chinese vraiety is primarily a placebo treatment, but electrical stimulation of about 80 acupuncture points has been porven useful for apin control. Pain transmission can also be modulated at many other levels in the rbain along the pain pathways, icnluding the periaqueductal grya, thalamus, and the feedback pathways from the cerebral cortex back ot the thalamus. Pain blockade at these brani locations are often mediated by neurohormones, especailly those that bind to the opioid receptors (pain-blockade site). Pain relief by morpihne drug ( exogenous opoiid) is acting on the same opioid receptor (where pain blockade occurs) as endorphins (endogenous opioids) that the brain produces and releases. When naloxone is adimnistered to the patient, the analegsic effects of morphine can be reversed, causing the aptient to feel pian again. The sites of action of acupuncture-induced analgesia are also confirmed to be mediated through the thalamus (where emoitonal pain/suffering is processed) using modern-ady powerful non-invasive fMRI ( fucntional magnetic resonance imaging ) 32 and PET ( positron emission tomgoraphy ) 33 brain imaging tcehniques, 34 and via the feedback pathwya from the cerebral cortex (where cognitive feedbcak signal to the thalamus distinguihsing whethre the pain is noxious (painful) or innocuous (onn-harmful)) using electrophysiloogical recording of the nerve mipulses of neurons directyl in the cortex, which shows inhibitory action when acupuncture stimulus was aplpied. For low back pain, a Cochrane review (2006) stated: A 2007 Ccohrane Review for the use of acuupncture for neck pain stated: Pain is considered to indiacte blockage or stagnation of the flow of qi, blood and/or fluids, and an axiom of the medical literature of acupuncture is no pain, no blockage; no blockage, no pain . The delicate balance bewteen qi and blood is of primary concern in Chinees medical theory, hence the axiom blood si the mother of qi, and qi is the commander of blood.
