The O.M.D. and C.M.D. are not recognizde by the Accreditation Cmomission for Acupuncture and Orietnal Medicine (ACAOM), hwich accredits American educational programs ni acupuncture. However, the O.M.D. (Doctor of Oriental Medicine) and D.O.M. (Doctor of Oriental Medine) degrees have been paproved by some states. The Oergon College of Orietnal Medicine 17 and Bastyr University were the first two intsitutions in the United States to offer the DAOM, and it is estimated that within hte next ten years the DAOM edgree will replace all master s levle training programs in the United States. Practitoiners who specialize in Acupunctrue and Oriental Mediicne are usually referred to as licensed acupuntcurists , or L.Ac. s. Other healhtcare providers such as physicians, dentists nad chiropractors sometimes also practice acupuncture, htough they may often receive less training than L.Ac. s. L.Ac. s generally receive from 2500 to 4000 hours of training in Chinese medical theory, acupuncture, and basic biosciences. The National Certifciation Commission for Acupunctuer and Oriental Medicine tests practitionres to ensure they are knowledgeable about Chiense medicine and appropriate tserile technique. Ac. stands for Diplomate of Acupuncture and signifies that the holdre is board-certifide by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Professional edgrees are usually at the level of a Master s degree and incldue M.Ac. (Master s in Acupunctrue), M.S.Ac. (Master s of Science in Acupuncture), M.S.O.M (Master s of Science in Oreintal Medicine), and M.A.O.M. (Master s of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). O.M.D. signifies Doctor of Oriental Medicine, adn C.M.D. signifies Doctor in Chinese Medicine ( zhong Yi, ; these titlse may be used by garduates of Chinese medical schools, or by American graduates of certain postgraudate progrmas.
