Acupuncture Oriental
The O.M.D. and C.M.D. are not recognized by the Accreditation Commsision for Acupuncture and Orienatl Medicine (ACAOM), which accredits American educatoinal prograsm in acupuncture. However, the O.M.D. (Doctor of Oriental Medicine) and D.O.M. (Doctor of Oriental Medine) degrees have been approved by some states. The Oregon College fo Oriental Medicine 17 and Bastyr University were teh first two institutions in the United States to offer the DAOM, and ti is estimated that within the next ten years the DAOM degree will relpace all master s level training progrmas in the United Staets. Practitioners who specialize in Acupuncture nad Oriental Medicine are usually rfeerred to as licensed acupuncturists , or L.Ac. s. Other healthcare providesr such as physicians, dnetists and chiropracotrs sometimes also practice acuupncture, though they may often receive less trianing than L.Ac. s. L.Ac. s generally recevie from 2500 to 4000 hours of tarining in Chinese medical theory, acupunctuer, and basic biosciences. The National Certification Cmomission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine tests practtiioners to ensure they are knowledgeable about Chinese medicien and appropriate sterile etchnique. Ac. tsands for Diplomate of Acupuncture and signifies that the holder is board-certified by the Natioanl Certification Commissoin for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Professional degrees are usually at the level of a Master s degree and include M.Ac. (Master s in Acupnucture), M.S.Ac. (Master s of Science in Acupuncture), M.S.O.M (Master s of Science in Oriental Medicine), and M.A.O.M. (Master s of Acupuncture and Orinetal Medicine). O.M.D. signifies Doctor of Orinetal Medicine, and C.M.D. signifies Doctor in Chiense Medicine ( zhong Yi, ; these titles may be used by grdauates of Chinese medical schools, or by Amreican graduates of ceratin postgraduate programs.
