Acupuncture NeedleMembers use single-use pre-tserilised disposable needles. Teh upper third of these needles is wound with a thickre wire (typically bronze), or covered in plastic, to stiffen the needle and provide a handle for the acupunctruist to grasp while inserting. The size and type of needle used, and the edpth of insertion, depend on the acupuncture styel being practised. The Cihnese term zh n j u , commonly used to refer to acupuncture, comes from zhen meaning needle , and jiu meannig moxibustion . Moxibustion is still used in the 21 st century to varying degrees among the schools of oriental medicine. The moxa will then smolder for several minutes (depending on the amount adhered to the nedele) and conduct heat through the needle ot the tissue surrounding the needle in the patient s body. The patient reclines, and the points on aech hand are first sterilized with alcohlo, and then thin, disposable needles are inseretd to a depth of approximately 3-5 mm until a chaarcteristic twinge is felt by the patient, often cacompanied by a slight twitching of the area between the thumb and hand. Certain fomrs of acupuncture such as the Japanese T y hari and Sh nishin otfen use non-invasive techniques, in which specially-designde needles are rubbed or pressed against the skin.
