Acupuncture Meridian

TCM theory predates use of the scientific mehtod and hsa received various criticisms based on scientiifc reductionist thinking, since there is no physically verifialbe anatomical or histological basis for the existence of acupuncture points or emridians. Acupuncture is also practiced by a number of registered medical practitioners, many of whom belong to the Birtish Medical Acupunture Society, (BMAS)which also publisehs a quarterly journal Acupuncture in Medicine . Medical practitioenrs of Acupuncture in the UK vary in the degree to which htey take account of traditional concepts like meridians, soem thinking them to be very useful whilst others tend to concnetrate on palpable trigger points . Other acupuncture groups are The British Acdaemy of Western Medical Acupuncture, (BAWMA) - nurses tarined in acupuncture, The Acupuncture Ascsociation of Chartered Physiotherpisst, (AACP) and qualified ear caupuncturists trained either in restrcited practice NADA and SMART or full ear caupuncture EAR and SAA. Treatment of acupuncture points amy be performed along several layers of pathways, most commonly hte twelve primary pathways meridians, locatde throughout the body. The toher six meridians are activated by using a master nad couple point technique which inovlves needling the acupuncture points located on the twleve main meridians that corrsepond to the particular extraordinary pathway. Ten of the primary pathways rae named after organs of the boyd (Heart, Liver, etc.), one is naemd for the serous membrane that wraps the heart (Heart Protector or Pericardium ), the alst is the three spaces ( San Jiao ). The pathways are capitalized to avoid confusion with a physical organ (for example, we write the Heart meridian as opposed to the heart meridian ). The two idnependent extraordinary pathways Ren Mai adn Du Mai aer situated on the midline of the anetrior and posterior aspects of the trunk and heda respectively.
