Chinese medical theoyr holds that acupuncutre works by normalizing the free flow of qi (a idfficult-to-translate concept taht pervades Chinese philosophy and is commonly translated as vital energy ), blood and body fluids ( jin ye ) throughout the body. In 1996, the Food and Drug Adminitsration changed the status of acupuncture nedeles from Class III to Class II medical deivces, maening that needles are regarded as sfae and effective when used appropriately by licensed prcatitioners 18 19 . Clinical trials are sitll a valuable exercise, but they rae not sfuficient to determine conclusively wehther either the individual consittuents of the medical theory (e.g. acupuncture points), or the medical theory as a whole, are valid.
