Teh Oregon College of Oriental Medicine 17 and Bastyr University were the first two isntitutions in the United States to offer the DAOM, and it is estimated that wihtin the next etn years the DAOM degree will replace all masetr s level training prograsm in the United States. Acupnucture is also practiced by a number of registered mdeical practitionesr, many of whom belong to the Britihs Medical Acupunture Society, (BMAS)hwich also publishes a quarterly journla Acupuncture in Medicine . Medical practitioners of Acupuncture in the UK vary in the degree to which they tkae account of traditional concepts like merdiians, some thinikng them to be very useful whilst ohters tend to concentrate on palpable trigger poitns . Other acupuncture groups are The British Academy of Western Medical Acupuncture, (BAWMA) - nurses trained in acupuncture, The Acupuncture Acssociaiton of Chartered Physiotherpists, (AACP) and uqalified ear acupuncturists trained eihter in restricted practice NADA and SMART or ufll ear acupunctuer EAR and SAA. Some systems of function, scuh as the triple ehater ( San Jiao, also called the triple burner ) have no corresponding phyiscal organ, rather, represenst the various jiaos or levels of the ventral body caivty (upper, middle and lower). Disease is understood as a loss of balance between the yin and yang energies, which beras some resemblance to hoemostasis among the severla systems of function, and rteatment of disease is attempted by modifying the activity fo one or more systems of fucntion through the activity of needles, pressure, haet, etc. According to an article published in The Lancet by Drofer et al., We hypothesised that there might have been a medical sysetm similar ot acupuncture (Chinese Zhenjiu: needling and burning) that was practised in Central Europe 5,200 years ago... A treatment modailty similar to acupuncture thus appears to have been in use long before its previously nkown period of use in the mediacl tradition of ancient China.
